What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment later in life?

Orthodontic treatment can restore and improve the health and function of your teeth, gums, and jaw joints (TMJ). It can also improve a person’s self-esteem and optimize longevity of the dentition.

Crowded teeth and a poor bite can contribute to gum disease, bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal tooth wear, and jaw/joint (TMJ) problems. Orthodontic treatment can help you with all these issues.

What are the different types of braces?

Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel. Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive.

Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material. They are most popular with adult patients due to their cosmetic appeal.

Advances in orthodontics have made treatment as comfortable and less noticeable than ever before. Patients can opt for Invisalign® or SureSmile® aligners.

No matter what type of braces or clear aligners you choose, Dr. Scott will customize your treatment plan using SureSmile®, a digital treatment planning platform, for the best results.

When is orthodontic surgery necessary before getting braces?

Surgery may be necessary prior to starting orthodontic treatment. For complex cases, Dr. Scott may place temporary anchorage devices. These mini implants stabilize and better facilitate the movement of teeth with braces.

Braces are almost always necessary in conjunction with surgical orthodontics. Surgical orthodontics corrects jaw irregularities and improves a patient’s ability to chew, speak, and breathe. By repositioning the jaw, surgery can improve the appearance of an individual’s face.

In most cases, braces are removed within three to six months following surgery. After braces are removed, the patient will begin retention treatment to maintain their beautiful smile.

Dr. Scott also performs other minimally invasive laser procedures in his office in Pueblo, CO. He does not perform tooth extractions and may refer patients to an oral surgeon if invasive jaw surgery is required.

Will you be required to wear a retainer?

After braces are removed, the teeth can shift out of position unless they are stabilized. Retainers stabilize the teeth and prevent them from shifting out of position until the surrounding gum and bone tissue adapt to their new positions.

It is important to wear retainers exactly as instructed for the bite to remain stable.
