What are the signs you need TMJ therapy?

You may benefit from non-invasive TMJ treatment if you suffer from nightly teeth grinding or any of the following symptoms:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Facial pain
  • Pain in front of the ear
  • Jaw lock or limitation of jaw movement
  • Popping noises in the jaw
  • Aching jaw
  • Pain when opening and closing mouth
  • Worn down teeth (as the result of teeth grinding)
  • Receding gum line

Dr. Scott is a Roth-Williams orthodontist and focuses on the movement and positioning of the temporomandibular joint and its relation to your smile and quality of life.

What does TMJ treatment entail?

First, Dr. Scott will perform a clinical evaluation and take an overview of your medical history.

As a Roth-Williams orthodontist, Dr. Scott is equipped and trained to diagnose TMD with an articulator instrument, which will produce plaster models and help us analyze the relationship between your TMJ, skull, and the rest of your oral cavity.

In some cases, Dr. Scott may use tomographic x-rays, and cone-beam computed tomography (CT) for diagnostics and treatment planning.

TMJ treatment typically involves splint therapy. A splint is a custom-fit, removable appliance that can reduce painful symptoms and stabilize the entire chewing system. In other cases, custom occlusal night guards may be administered to patients suffering from teeth grinding.

Dr. Scott and our team will also work on improving your lifestyle to reduce stress and help you sleep better at night.
